What can you do?
"What must be done to cope with stigmas, taboos and the underlying mythology?"
The key is knowledge. But you would be forgiven for saying that this isn't actually an answer. It is true that knowledge is the key, but it is also important who gains the knowledge and how the person concerned gains his or her knowledge.
If you are suffering from depression or believe that you are, there are other places on DepNet where you can find other people with the same problems. It can be a great help to read their stories. It is important to learn as much about depression as possible.
If you have not already been to the doctor, you should do so now. You should also try to get family and friends to learn about depression. They can start here at DepNet. You can also write about your experiences and thoughts in the diary.
The immediate environment of a person suffering from depression
If you are a colleague or boss of a person who is suffering from depression, we welcome you with open arms. Not only are you a representative of the "public", you are also part of the person's immediate environment. You are therefore in the best position to dispel the mythology in the person's working environment and get rid of the taboos and stigmas.
Ultimately, knowledge is the only antidote to myths, stigmas and taboos. It would be wonderful if there was something as simple as a pill, a spray or something which you could dissolve in water which would give us immediate understanding. But there isn't. It can be tough to learn about depression. But it is the only thing you can do.
Our challenge to you!
