The role of age
Age plays an important role in the way in which depression expresses itself.
Elderly people
Many elderly people suddenly seem as though they are unable to cope with the lifestyle they are accustomed to. This can make them seem senile and in need of sheltered accommodation or a place in a nursing home.
There are many physical symptoms which are linked to depression in elderly people. These include weight or appetite changes, constipation and sleeping problems.
There are often changes in the intensity of the illness from morning to evening. We call this morning pains and evening relief. You should keep a watchful eye if symptoms from a previous period of depression reappear. The person will often dismiss the idea of a serious illness so avoiding the visit to the doctor that is essential to get treatment started as soon as possible.
Young people
Depression in young people often causes them to become very isolated. Isolation increases the risk of suicide. The person may also lack the energy to keep up at school. Their grades can suddenly fall. He or she can also lose interest in their leisure activities.
Most doctors often refer young people with depression for treatment by a specialist psychiatrist.
Adults
Depression in adults is often characterised by them
- viewing everything very pessimistically
- having thoughts which revolve around the dark side of life
- trying to pretend that everything is wonderful
- not enjoying daily chores
- criticising themselves even though they try to hide it
Sexual symptoms
Depression in adults can also be apparent through their
- love life being dull and their interest in sex disappearing
- their spouse suddenly feeling sexually ignored by their partner
- their spouse mulling over discussions with their partner during the night
You should be very aware of changes in your partner's interest in sex. It is important that you do not ignore the illness because of a bruised ego, or because you feel ignored or rejected for example.
