Kill off myths

There are unfortunately many misconceptions and myths linked to mental illnesses. This also very much applies to depression. Many people keep their depression secret and feel guilt and shame. It is therefore important that you are aware of some of the myths and misconceptions concerning depression that a close relative or friend can have:

  • "Depression is the first step on the way to madness". This is completely untrue.
  • "Depression is a "normal" reaction to a life event, which just has to be "lived through". Nothing could be further from the truth. Depression is an illness which must be treated.
  • "Antidepressants lead to addiction." This is untrue. Most antidepressants are not sedatives and does not lead to addiction.
  • "Antidepressants change people's personality." This is also untrue. The treatment removes the depression and lets the normal personality come out.

These myths and misconceptions can unfortunately result in the person

  • not contacting the doctor to have his or her condition reviewed
  • or contacting their doctor too late
  • stopping the treatment at the wrong time
  • not telling people around them about their depression

When you are aware of these myths and misconceptions, you can help to kill them off.
