Help yourself
If a member of your family or a close friend is suffering from depression, it will of course affect your emotions and those of the people around you. It may also have an effect of the family's financial circumstances if one of the breadwinners in the family falls ill with depression.
Do you need support?
It takes patience, understanding and knowledge to be a relative or close friend of someone suffering from depression. In order to give the necessary support, you may also need help yourself.
It can be comforting and a relief for you to share your difficulties and experiences with others. There are organisations that you can contact to meet people or get advice and guidance. One of them is the Malaysian Mental Health Association.

The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) is a voluntary, non profit organization registered with the Registrar of Societies since 1968. It is managed by an elected committee comprising mental health professionals and other volunteers committed to the promotion of mental health in the community.
The Deparment of Psychological Medicine, University Malaya Medical Centre runs a Early Detection of Mental Illness Unit. The unit has a interactive voice system helpline: 03-79585752 to help you recognise symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and bipolar diorder. This line is active 24 hour a day.
